This video is just fabulous. What a considerate and well rounded response from David. Everyone would do well to listen to this short clip
Think agnosticism would be a better title for this video
Feelings and desires are not in the realm of reality.
I think even most atheists hope to be wrong. No one wants oblivion after they die. Not really
It's all a simulation. The religious are probably A.I. NPCs.
Thank you, Davi Mitchell, for that beautifully sensible explanation of your views!

He just sounds like a hater
If only more people were as brilliant and well spoken as David Mitchell
Athiest just means "without god" in Latin, it doesn't claim there is absolutely no god but asserts you don't have faith in the existence of god. You can certainly be an agnostic athiest
I disappointed in you, David. Agnosticism is wimpish.
It’s sad to see when somebody reaches the age of sixty and was never able to take that final step and outgrow the dogma they were indoctrinated with. Alas
I agree with your sentiment, but he won't be fifty until July.
I've seen this video several times but never made the obvious comment: I am personally annoyed by David Mitchell.
Atheism isn't a comfort to me at all. I just don't believe the claims I've heard about gods existing. I don't think anyone else knows either, so technically we are all agnostic. I don't believe those that claim to know, and I certainly don't trust those that claim to speak for a god.
Nah. He's normally a decent bloke but here he's spewing nonsense.
Atheism is the most rational of the options. It is irrational to assume the existence of a god in the same way it is irrational to assume the existence of Cthulhu. Would you consider it to be rational to be agnostic about the existence of Cthulhu? Agnostic doesn't mean you are open to the possibility, it means you think either possibility is just as likely which is patently false.
agnostic is basically atheist-lite. you don't believe in any gods, even if you're more open to the possibility than a "strong" atheist
But he has decided, like a theist, that despite no proof, he wants to believe there is a god and paints people who cant accept belief without facts as awful. His argument is disengenuous at best. Such mean atheists trying to strip conmfort from people who refuse to think rationally about reality. We are not meanies. We just want people to stop using beliefs foe which there is no proof from harming others. As long as you believe in anything without proof you are just one bad event in life from fundamentalism.
In truth, agnosticism is the only rational position. In truth, by definition, EVERYONE is agnostic.
You're right, by definition, everyone is agnostic. Declaring yourself to be agnostic provides no information.
Lucky day! Since there can never be nothing, nothing to worry about 😊
All I know is that I know nothing
Hmm, the issue with wanting there to be a benevolent God is you can never be sure It won't ever have a change of heart and turn into a sadistic maniac. Given the choice, prima facie, it would appear that a world without an all-powerful Deity would be the less riskier option. We face similar risks when it comes to the law of physics (who's to see they're immutable? ), but with God you face a proposition with infinite negative expected value in the form of eternal damnation. Not worth the risk in my opinion.
Wow! He did a great job of hiding the fact that he’s a Total Moron right up to this interview!🙉🙉🙉🐒💩💩💩👎
After all who do we want to praise if there’s no god?
Forgot Tango and cash, " crazy people aren't afraid of anybody" slinky.
David is being very generous and a little bit naive here. If all religion was is people being convinced they're immortal then fine, they can believe what they want but it's more than that. Religion, specifically christianity and islam, takes away human rights, specifically women, rejects and belittles the natural sciences and influences politics. Believing in superstition and woo woo has a negative effect on humanity.
I share David's sentiment here, but I feel like I must correct him on seomething: agnosticism is about the knowledge of God(s), while atheism is about the belief in God(s). So technically, everyone is agnostic about the existence of God(s) because no one truly knows with they exist or not since the belief in God(s) is based on faith and not evidence.
The most intelligent comments I've heard about religion and atheism.
I'm an agnostic too.😊
Well, Sir David, not all rational comedians know what "reason" means. I must confess I was afraid when I saw this video's title ... "Is he?" ... it was a relief to finally watch it.
Agnostics are basically religious people that haven't settled on any favorite god just yet. Atheism is pretty much binary, either you are or you ain't.
That's not what agnostic means
Here is a mindblowing consept: agnosic atheism Yes it is a thing...And and atheist is simply a person that don't belive in god. Agnostics dont know if it possible to know if god exist or not. Agnostic atheist, don't belive in god and at the same time don't if it ever possible to know if there is a god or not. Now what is more rational now ? To simply not believe or to assume that it's impossible to know or to be unsure about the belief or lack of belief. Truth is that all that don't believe in god, including so called doubters, unsure people, people that claim to know, claim it can't be know and everythingthing else under the banner of do not believe in god is atheist. If you do now know, you are not believing what you claim to not know do you. I don't know what to believe, is not a belief, but it is definitly a lack of belief in what you don't know what to believe. It might be a belief in lacking knowledge to know what to believe or not, but still the result becomes lacking belief in what you don't know what to belive about.
There is nothing worse than when a bias or a stigma is already pre-attached to literature and it created this pressure to compel the reader to see it in a certain perspective or otherwise you will be deemed as not having read it properly, to me the beauty of reading is discovering what perspective you have on the subject rather than having a preconceived notion about what I am reading.
How about all you "atheists" just start believing the Bible instead of waiting for someone or something to convince you? Through faith we understand, the Bible says. Start by reading the first four chapters of Romans from a King James Bible. The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom. Fear God, lost man...
No thank you. You can keep your stone age fairy tales.
Ha ha! Enjoy the lake of fire, loser...@@DevonMiniFlicks
As usual, Christians are keen to show their tolerance and love for their neighbour. Go be a hypocrite preacher somewhere else, we don't need a book to know how to be decent people.
You're a moron. And you're not my neighbour. @@sbef
He doesnt understand the meaning of atehism. Clearly. I am an agnostic atheist. I do not believe in any gods but its impossible to know for certain because god propostions are unfalsifiable.
*"Some who have read the book, or at any rate have reviewed it, have found it boring, absurd, or contemptible; and I have no cause to complain, since I have similar opinions of their works, or of the kinds of writing that they evidently prefer."* -- J.R.R Tolkien
An agnostic is just an atheist in denial
I love David, but I think it’s worth pointing out that getting rid of religion, it at least gets rid of one reason for humans to kill other humans. Of course getting rid of religion won’t stop human on human slaughter, but at least it might give one less reason to.
The argument that religions don't cause wars any more than other beliefs is OK as far as it goes. My objection is when religious dogma is used as an excuse to hate, fearmonger, and take rights away from women and minority groups.
Im so grateful for the compassion that David Mitchell shows here. What a lovely well rounded human being he is❤️❤️❤️
Only a comedian could perfectly articulate these very thoughts I've had in my head. Some find comfort in religion. I find comfort in comedy. Having one of my favorite comedians express my feelings about religion through comedy... well peak level achieved.
Reality is a bitch David, but it doesn't change what it is, champ.
he doesnt seem to ubderstand what either agnosticism or atheism are
True. I think we'll find out after death, our consciousness somehow joins an 'overmind'. Something we understand later. Or maybe a simulation,, not nothing.
Did you experience anything before you were even born? Did you experience anything during the time that Dinosaurs roamed the Earth? Of course not, and that is exactly what death is like - i.e. Nothing to be afraid of.
It's nothing to be afraid of. It's a 30 billion to 1 chance that this is base reality. Life is a simulation, probably. ua-cam.com/video/xBKRuI2zHp0/v-deo.html
I feel this way about moby dick
Poor reasoning by David. Disappointing.
Well... it comes down to definitions. Atheism is simply a lack of belief in any god. Atheists do not claim there is no God, but see no proof that a God exists.
Meh. That's an intellectual cop out. Disappointing.
So he had to admit that the idea of God being real is only a comfort
Agnostics are technically atheists
Nope. Not really.
